Privacy Policy

Overview

skimmy is a Chrome extension that helps you read articles faster by striking through low-information words in place. This policy describes what data the extension and website collect, how it is used, and your choices.

What we do not collect

• We do not operate user accounts or require sign-in for basic use.
• We do not send full article text to skimmy servers. Article processing happens on your device (Gemini Nano) or on a local LLM you configure (Ollama, LM Studio, etc.).
• We do not sell personal data.

Data stored on your device

The extension uses Chrome local storage to save:

• Optional local LLM settings (endpoint URL, model name, API key if you provide one)
• Stripe subscription ID after you subscribe (to verify Skimmy Pro access)
• Cached subscription validation result (up to 30 days)

This data stays in your browser unless you uninstall the extension or clear extension storage.

On-device AI (free tier)

When you use skim mode with Gemini Nano, paragraph text is processed by Chrome's built-in Prompt API on your device. That processing is subject to Google's terms and Chrome's on-device AI policies. skimmy does not receive those paragraphs on its own servers.

Free tier and Skimmy Pro

skimmy is free for up to 30 successfully skimmed paragraphs per page. Gemini Nano and optional local LLM (Ollama, LM Studio) are included at no cost. Skimmy Pro ($4.99/year) removes the per-page paragraph limit.

Local LLM (optional)

If you enable a bring-your-own LLM endpoint, the extension sends paragraph text directly from your browser to the endpoint you configure (for example, localhost). skimmy does not proxy or store that traffic.

Payments and subscription

Skimmy Pro is billed through Stripe Checkout ($4.99/year). Payment details are handled by Stripe; skimmy does not store card numbers. After checkout, your Stripe subscription ID is saved locally in the extension and may be sent to our API to check whether your subscription is active. We do not maintain a separate customer database — Stripe is the billing source of truth.

Refunds

Because Skimmy Pro is a low-cost, yearly subscription and all processing runs locally on your machine, we do not offer refunds for any purchases. You can cancel your subscription at any time to prevent it from renewing.

Website

The skimmy website (skimmy-txt.vercel.app) is a static landing page. We do not use analytics cookies on the site itself. After a successful Stripe checkout, the success page may communicate your subscription ID to the installed extension so it can activate Pro access.

Permissions

• activeTab — run skim mode on the page you are reading when you click the extension icon
• storage — save settings and subscription state locally
• host access — annotate article text on sites you visit; optional access to localhost for BYO LLM

Children

skimmy is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the latest version.
